A new era for property development
Andrew Harvey, Development Director
Andrew Harvey is the first to admit that the breadth of his career is unusual. But, it is his unlikely and extraordinary background that has primed him to carve out a new future for property development at Akron. And, it all began with determination and drive instilled in him from a young age.
As a student, Andrew set his sights on becoming an Air Force pilot, so knowing the necessary subject matter required, he committed to becoming proficient in maths and science. When he finished school, it was a logical step to progress into engineering, and successfully applied himself to complex disciplines like calculus, geophysics and structural analysis.
After completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil, Transport) at Monash University, Melbourne, Andrew cut his teeth as a consultant in strategic transport planning and modelling for several years. he was accepted into the Royal Australian Air Force as a pilot in 1988, graduating Officer Training and flying C T 4 trainers at Point Cook and graduating to Macchi jets at RAAF Pearce in Western Australia.
After completing his military career, his career has expanded through a well-rounded route through the realms of engineering, transport and property in several Australian states and the United Kingdom. He undertook additional studies including the completion of a Graduate Diploma in Property at Curtin University and a management program at the Graduate School of Management in Sydney. He has also been active with industry bodies such as Engineers Australia and the Urban Development Institute of Australia.
He is well placed to make critical and well-informed decisions on all aspects of greenfield development and urban renewal, which has instilled him with a passion for integrated urban design and transport solutions which result in delivery of people-focused infrastructure. He deeply understands the influence that design, transport and human scale can have on the safety and liveability of a community.
Andrew has consulted on award-winning urban renewal projects, and been a development manager for major property development groups including Mirvac, Satterley and masterplanned estate specialists, LWP Property Group. Andrew has provided strategic transport planning advice for major urban developments, overseen project management of major private and government projects including contaminated sites remediation, refurbishments of heritage buildings, public transport interchanges, prisons and telecommunications. He continues to participate in strategic infrastructure reviews for Government across several States.
Challenging the traditional mentality of the property development industry, Andrew’s role as Development Director at Akron sees him implement the company’s vision – which is focused on holistic long-term outcomes for communities and emphasises sustainable, positive lifestyles.
“We cannot just build streets and footpaths, and not think about the future community. At Akron, we believe it’s our responsibility as developers to create neighbourhoods that place importance on how people live, not just where they live,” he says.
“Maintaining a holistic approach, our mission is to plan and deliver progressive, connected and sustainable neighbourhoods. We want to enhance the lives of residents with community connectedness and placemaking at the very top of the agenda.”
Andrew continues to mentor recent graduates and assists with the UDIA Victorian Professional Development Programme.
